County requests funds for business park development
By Wendy Johnson wjohnson@pinejournal.com The county’s wish list of items to be included in the 2010 Minnesota State Bonding Bill continues to grow. At Monday’s meeting of the Carlton County Board, County Economic Development Director Pat Oman requested the board’s support in applying for funding for a portion of the proposed county business park/housing development project to be located on county-owned land along Old Highway 61 just off Highway 210. The board unanimously supported the request. Oman later explained the county is eligible to apply for up to half of the proposed cost of the project, which he estimated will be in the range of $500,000 to $1 million. He said the capital funding would help cover such costs as infrastructure, additional land acquisition, road construction and railroad crossing development. Applications for consideration in the state’s 2010 bonding bill are due by the end of this week. The county is also seeking funding for its government services building and Phase Two of the St. Louis River Trail project. In further business to come before the board, Hannah Friedrich of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Lands and Minerals, unveiled a new aggregate resources map for the county and the Fond du Lac Reservation. Friedrich, working in collaboration with the Minnesota Geologic Survey County Atlas program, researched the subject and developed the mapping over the past year at the request of the county board. The newly developed document maps the potential locations for aggregate resources such as sand and gravel and crushed stone in order to give local governments and land use planners a more accurate idea of where those resources are located. “Aggregate issues are important to all of us,” said Friedrich, “because they are used in roads as well as private and public projects. It is important to keep the supply local as much as we can.” In developing the mapping resource, Friedrich conducted some 1,200 field operations and 53 drill sites and located 424 pits. The aggregate resources map, available both in hard copy and digitally, will be publicly released in an event planned for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at the County Transportation Building on Old Highway 61 in rural Carlton. After that, it will be available at area libraries or free of charge by special request. County Land Commissioner Greg Bernu reported that the recent county timber sale resulted in $121,154 in total revenue. He said the next timber sale will take place in December.By Wendy Johnson , June 25, 2009
