Move over!
Few local residents will ever forget that fateful July day eight years ago when Captain Kim Granholm, 29, of the Esko Volunteer Fire Department was fatally injured while working a vehicle fire along Interstate 35. An inattentive driver, who left the scene and was later arrested, triggered a chain-reaction accident by striking several emergency and private vehicles on the right shoulder of Interstate 35, killing Granholm and injuring two others.By Wendy Johnson , September 09, 2010

Gentlemen (and Ladies), take your corners!
There’s little doubt in anyone’s minds that election time is fast approaching. With the primaries out of the way early this year, the campaigning for November’s general election is already getting under way in earnest.

During the dog days of summer, leave Fido at home
Please, leave your pet at home if you can’t bring him or her in with you wherever you’re going, and if you see a pet in a parked car during a warm sunny day, go to the nearest store and have the owner paged.

The primary thing to remember this summer? Vote!
Ah, the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! School’s out, clubs and organizations have all but come to a screeching halt, and folks are cashing in on some long-awaited vacation time.

Practice makes perfect
The midday sky grows dark and then takes on a strangely greenish hue. The atmosphere goes from abnormally still to suddenly turbulent. Worried residents and business people keep an uneasy eye on the sky as they go about their daily tasks.
And then, a siren begins to wail.

The tradition will remain in Carlton
It has been loosely suggested in recent editorials submitted to the Pine Journal that the city of Carlton and the Carlton Fire Department have been irresponsible in passing on the “opportunity” to join the Cloquet Area Fire District. So it continues: the ever-growing debate of whether a community is acting responsibly to their residents if they have chosen whether or not to join Cloquet Area Fire District.

It’s not all that hard being green
Newsprint recycling has been around for a long time, and when readers finish up with their weekly issue of the Pine Journal or Northland Smart Shopper, chances are it will head into the recycling bin. It’s one of those “feel good” things that all of us can do for the environment without too much effort.
