Horse racing, Carlton County Fair go hand in hand
There has been horse racing at the Carlton County Fair since 1892.
The first Carlton County Fair was held in 1891 in a store building in Carlton. The next year, Barnum supporters won the debate and the venue moved to a 29-acre tract of land from Northern Pacific Railroad.
Since that time, every other county fair in Minnesota that has offered horse racing has dropped it.

Boxing card at fairgrounds draws 600
“Lights Out in Barnum” was an unqualified success.
The first boxing card in memory held at the Carlton County Fairgrounds resulted in a crowd of over 600 fighters, coaches and fans on July 23.

Three charged in Barnum Little Store armed robbery appear in court
The three defendants accused in an armed robbery of the Barnum Little Store on Tuesday, July 12, appeared in Carlton County Court this week.
Joe Martin Proano, 23, of Duluth, Brittany AnneMarie Reilly, 20, also of Duluth, and Edward James O’Brien, 49, of Moose Lake all made their initial appearances for Rule 8 hearings. They all face one felony count of first-degree aggravated robbery and one felony count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Bail was set at $100,000 bond or $10,000 cash for all of them.

Barnum boxing club aims to develop good kids, good boxers
“I’m going to knock the girl out.”
Confidence among boxers is legendary. Then there’s the confidence of 8-year-old Mandi Soderholm of Mahtowa.
She’s one of seven students of Cloquet’s Phil Angell, who has co-founded the C&C Northland Boxing Club and Fitness Center in Barnum. Soderholm and a host of other new fighters will take to the ring for the first time on July 23 at the Carlton County Fairgrounds.

Barnum Bombers tumble in finals
First-year coach Sarah Yrjanson took her Barnum softball team about as far as they could have gone this spring. Perhaps, even farther.
Following the departure of longtime head coach Randy Myhre, as well as a number of key players on last spring’s state tournament team, many didn’t think the rookie head coach could copy last year’s success this spring.

Bombers break sixth-inning tie to defeat Cardinals
Barnum won the game, but just barely.
With the score tied, junior Karianna Duesler came screaming around the bases to score the game-winning run on an overthrow to first base, as the Bombers topped visiting Cromwell-Wright 10-9 Monday afternoon in Barnum.
Duesler started the final play as a runner on first base following her leadoff walk. The next batter was sophomore Paige Rilea, whose sacrifice bunt was thrown over first to allow Duesler to come around for the walk-off Polar League victory.
