Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed an agreement this morning to pay U.S. Steel $18 million for 3,000 acres along Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota to becme a new state park. Development of the park may take more than a decade, but visitors may be able to make limited use later this year.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Haley Bassett’s goal with 39.8 seconds remaining in regulation rescued Cloquet from imminent defeat and sent its girls soccer state tournament game against East Ridge into overtime tied at 1-1 tonight at Roseville Area High School.
Two young people were in critical condition and another escaped with only minor injuries following an accident on I-35 last Saturday, Sept. 6.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1997 Acura Integra driven by Mark A. Swenson, 16, of Duluth was traveling northbound at mile marker 225 when the car he was driving spun out of control, leaving the roadway and striking a tree.
The proposal for a State Veterans Cemetery, to be located on a 68-acre corner of Jay Cooke State Park, appears to be very much alive and well, according to a contingency that spoke in support of the proposal at Tuesday’s regular session of the Carlton County Board.
No matter the outcome of this week's Minnesota State Boys Hockey Tournament, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton team will be welcomed home with fanfare in a celebration starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Cloquet Area Recreation Center (CARC).
While it's safe to say Cloquet-Esko-Carlton benefited from some odd bounces Thursday night at the DECC, there's little doubt the Lumberjacks deserved their 3-2 victory over Anoka in the Section 7AA championship game.
