It stood tall and proud, garbed in the first blush of springtime and arguably the tallest tree on the block.
But when the high humidity and unsettled atmospheric pressure descended on the Cloquet area last Sunday, the offshoot was a single, terrible lightning strike that devastated the magnificent silver maple tree in the yard of Joanne Harden’s 23rd Street home in Scanlon.
After a peak reading just over flood stage, the St. Louis River in Scanlon is receding, according to the National Weather Service.
As of Friday, the river was running at high levels from considerable snowmelt and heavy rain. The peak reading hit Saturday at just over flood stage of 10.5 feet at 10.6.
Today, however, as of 10:30 a.m., the water level had dropped to 10.14 feet, the National Weather Service said.
