Healthy students are happy students
Third-grader Maverick Buchin said it best when he stated, “I have to keep myself healthy. I’m going to be a scientist when I grow up.”
Buchin is one of 450 students in the Barnum Elementary School eating healthier lunches during the school day than most of us remember from our own childhood school lunch experience. That is all thanks to the Barnum School District’s commitment to the health of their students and their decision to provide higher-grade options in the lunchroom, including fresh fruits and vegetables for free.

Cloquet native studies ‘coming of age’
When Dr. Nathan LeBrasseur was a student at Cloquet High School, he was interested in both medicine and law – but he wasn’t certain just where he was headed with either.
“I think if anyone had asked me when I was 17 what I was going to do with my life, I probably wouldn’t have had the answer back then. I would have been pulling at straws,” he admitted. “But things just kind of worked out. During my life I have been fortunate to have good mentors, but I’ve also sought out good mentors and that’s been fundamental to my success.”

School districts take referendum votes to the people on Tuesday
What is an operating levy? An operating levy is a method by which school districts can raise additional revenue with voter approval. The revenue raised through an operating levy supplements regular state education funding. Close to 90 percent of the state’s school districts have local levies to support education. The state average for a local levy is $936 per student.
