The district was seeking a $33 million bond referendum in support of the construction of a new school for students in Early Childhood through 12th grade. It was the third referendum the district has sought in the last nine years — and the third to be defeated.
Two arrests were made in the early morning hours on Wednesday in the homicide case involving Kim Schmitz and Tom Holm of Cromwell. David Joshua Annette (aka Josh Martineau), 28, and Rachel Charlotte Defoe, 25, both of Cloquet, were arrested for second-degree murder in the case, which has remained open since the time the murders were discovered Jan. 9.
Daniel Hawkin II, 43, of Duluth, a sergeant in the Superior Police Department, was arrested by Duluth police about 11:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report that Hawkin was involved in a domestic dispute.
