Most area events would be envious of having nearly 500 people in attendance on a single night. But the Carlton County Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) just keeps packing ’em in year after year for its annual banquet. This year’s 30th anniversary celebration, held last Thursday at the Four Seasons Sports Complex in Carlton, was no exception.
Panels meeting in Tower and Floodwood this past week suggested mostly moderate increases in deer population goals for most deer permit areas in those regions, said Jeff Lightfoot, regional wildlife manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Grand Rapids.
Numbers varied between permit areas, but overall the numbers were down for this year's firearms hunting season in the Cloquet area and statewide. This story contains updated numbers not available for the print version in the Pine Journal.
