Barb Soukkala has been around volleyball so long that when she began playing in 1972, her uniform included a turtleneck.
Perhaps a little outdated in today’s game, there’s nothing unfashionable about Soukkala’s career in the sport.
The Bulldogs were swept last Thursday against second-seeded Minneota, followed by a five-set loss to unseeded Martin County West on Friday in the small school’s third-ever state tournament trip and first since 2004.

The Carlton Bulldogs trounced visiting Deer River in a season-opening sweep Tuesday. The 3-0 win — within the steamy Carlton High School gymnasium — was the first since the Bulldogs were disappointedly swept by North Woods in last year’s Section 7A final, one step shy of the state tournament.
