It’s the season for storytelling, and Sawyer will shine on Saturday
It’s time for the annual Dibaajimowini maawanji’idiwin, an entire afternoon of storytelling, music and many things Anishinaabe at the Fond du Lac Sawyer Center, 3243 Moorhead Road, Cloquet. Registration starts at noon Saturday, Feb. 18, with a 1 p.m. feast, storytelling from 2 p.m. on and kids’ activities.

Band begins national tribal mentoring program
The University of Minnesota 4-H program, in conjunction with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, has successfully secured a grant to support the “4-H Mentoring: Youth and Families with Promise (4-H YFP)” program in up to 29 tribal communities, reaching 1,100 Native American youth ages 10-17.

Local diabetes prevention program wins American Diabetes Association Award
The Fond du Lac Human Services (FDLHS) Diabetes Prevention Program was presented with the American Diabetes Association “John Pipe Voices for Change Award” in recognition for its innovative diabetes services in American Indian communities. The award was presented Sept. 28 at the National Indian Health Board’s (NIHB) 28th Annual Consumer Conference in Anchorage, Alaska.

Local law enforcement gains ‘one more tool’ in locating missing children
Around noon last Saturday, a 13-year-old girl was reported missing in the Cloquet area. Her parents told the Cloquet Police Department that she had told them she was going for a walk but that she had been gone for an extended period of time.

Fond du Lac programs provide native take on addiction treatment
Two Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa treatment centers – Tag Wii for adults and Mino Wii Jii Win for adolescents – were dedicated Friday. County endorses land exchange with reservation
Carlton County commissioners endorsed a plan Monday that will pave the way for a major Class B (equal value) land exchange between the county and the Fond du Lac Reservation. The board voted unanimously in favor of a plan wherein the reservation would purchase 1,450 acres of land in Clear Creek Township for $1.7 million from a development company known as Land and Cabins, which owns first option on the land with Potlatch Minnesota Timberlands.

Lacrosse-4-Life camp a second-year success
The Lacrosse-4-Life camp at the Fond du Lac Reservation is more than a sports camp. For its American Indian participants, who travel here from reservations around Minnesota and Wisconsin, it is an opportunity to learn to play a sport invented by their ancestors, meet kids from other places and acquire the knowledge to live a healthier lifestyle.
