Norman Louis Horner
Norman Louis Horner, 61, of Fairbanks, Alaska, has come home to our Lord. He peacefully passed away on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Norman was born in Cloquet, Minn., to John and Mary(Watson) Horner on June 22, 1951. He graduated from Barnum High School in 1969. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving eight years. Norman moved to Fairbanks in 1981, working on Ft. Wainwright Army base where he retired from.

Francis 'Barney' Hage
Francis “Barney” Hage, 92, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. Barney was born April 25, 1920, in Independence, Minn. He graduated from Cotton High School. After graduating, he then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. On Nov. 20, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and after two years, he joined the Air Force to become a pilot. After his active duty he continued to serve in the Air Force reserve until he retired as a major. Barney worked for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for 36 years at many different locations.

John Manton Upton Thompson
John Manton Upton Thompson, 79, of Moose Lake, Minn., died Nov. 22, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake. He was born Aug. 20, 1933, at Mahtowa, Minn., the only son born to Roy and Ida Thompson. John graduated from Cloquet High School in 1952. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Mississippi, Florida and Alaska. John was employed at Chief Theater in Cloquet, First National Bank in Cloquet, the Art Institute and Hornblower and Weeks in Chicago. He returned to Duluth, Minn., where he was employed by the Marine Museum and The Depot. John was a member of the Swedish Cultural Society, Carlton County Historical Society, and was a board member of the Food Shelf. He lived in Moose Lake after retirement.

Edna Murto
Edna Murto, 85, of Esko, Minn., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012. She was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Mahtowa, Minn., to Matt and Gustava Pesonen. She graduated from Barnum High School in 1945. Edna married Rudy Murto in October 1948. Edna worked at Diamond Match for 43½ years, retiring in 1992. While there, she was active in the Matchmaker’s Local 970, serving as either president or secretary for more than 30 years. She was also active in the Central Labor Body for more than 40 years and served as its secretary for most of that time. Edna was active in the Carlton County Labor Day Celebration for more than 40 years.

Christine May Parks
Christine May Parks, 73, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Sunnyside Health Care Center. She was born Sept. 19, 1939, in Soudan, Minn., to Christian and Virginia (Bruneau) Berg. Christine attended schools and graduated from Tower-Soudan High School. She worked several summers at the End of The Trail Lodge and at her aunt and uncle's resort on Saganaga Lake where she met the love of her life, David Parks. She and David where united in marriage in Tower, Minn., after her graduation from nursing school in Virginia, Minn., in 1959. Christine worked for the Virginia Hospital for a short time, and also for St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. before starting a 43-year career at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, retiring in 2002.

For the love of the draw: Holyoke couple fall in love with quick draw shooting
Debbie and Marvin Stadin of Holyoke are part of a burgeoning niche in the gun owning community that calls itself the Cowboy Fast Draw Association. It’s exactly what it sounds like, only instead of drawing on another man, the shooter draws on a 2-foot diameter circular target. Debbie won state championships in South Dakota and Minnesota this summer and came in fifth in Worlds in Nevada.
