Norway native Leif Andol and Duluth writer Margi Preus are featured speakers at the symposium “Norway and the Nazis: The Resistance 1940-1945” at the Cloquet Public Library May 2-14. Preus will give a slide presentation on Thursday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. Andol will speak about his experience growing up under occupation and about the Kompani Linge (“Linge Company”) saboteurs on Saturday, May 11, at 10:30 a.m.

Audrey Sharon Smith, 87, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. She was born in Atkinson, Minn., on July 31, 1925, to John and Anna (Jacobs) Wolf. She was a school aide at Leach Elementary School, where she was affectionately known as “Moonie.” Audrey loved to spend time with her family.

The National Weather Service continued its flood warning for the St. Louis River at Scanlon Wednesday morning. Although the river had dropped from 9.9 feet Tuesday to 9.8 feet Wednesday, weather service warnings said precipitation in the form of rain or snow Wednesday through Saturday will contribute to higher river flows.

Semi-pro football begins ‘Stampede’
Dewey Dupuis Jr. hasn’t played a game of organized football for more than two years, but the 19-year-old hasn’t lost his touch. “It’s my favorite sport,” said Dupuis, a 2011 graduate of Fond du Lac Ojibwe School and now starting free safety for the inaugural Carlton County Stampede semi-professional football team this summer.
