Roy Leon Asp
Roy Leon Asp, 88, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Floodwood, Minn., to Simon and Anna (Anderson) Asp. Roy was united in marriage to Vivian Roos on June 19, 1948. He worked as a salesman for Cutler-Magner, Huron Cement, and LaFarge. After his retirement, he also worked for Brenny-Dahl Block in Cloquet. Roy was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton, and was a former member of Dalles Masonic Lodge #181 A.F.&A.M. and the Scottish Rite in Duluth.

Arvin Frederick Henry Shipley of Esko, Minn., will be celebrating his 70th birthday as he enters the heavenly kingdom, being called to his eternal home on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. Arvin, called "Fred" by all who knew him, was born on Jan. 9, 1943, in Cloquet, Minn., the second child of Arvin B. "Dude" and Edythe (Youngkrantz) Shipley. He lived the first 12 years of his life in Scanlon. While in Scanlon, Fred had many friends in the community. At this time, Fred began his interest in automobiles: how they worked, and how to fix them if they didn’t work. Often, he and his dad had their hands and heads under the hood of a car.

Helen Wilhelmina Simberg
Helen Wilhelmina Simberg was called to Our Lord on Monday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Virginia Regional Medical Center in Virginia, Minn. She was 88 years young. Helen was born the youngest of eight children to Salomon Ludvig Latvala and Johanna Liisa Petteri Korpela in Cloquet, Minn., on June 8, 1924. She grew up and graduated high school in Cloquet and attended Duluth Business University. She worked in the Northwest Paper Company general office as a secretary (she used her shorthand the rest of her life), and had an active social life including golfing and dancing. She later met and married Viljo (Bud) Simberg. They moved to Virginia and built a house just north of town where she lived until Bud died in 2001. Helen worked at Apollo Piping Company until her retirement. Helen then spent the remaining years in Washington Manor and Edgewood Vista in Virginia. Helen and Bud's union produced four children: Carol Alison Simberg (Cal Root) of Elmhurst, Ill., Alan Webster Simberg (Donna Taquinto) of Maine, Steven Douglas Simberg (Patricia Kummer) of Virginia, and James Ronald Simberg of Racine, Wis.

Blaine Melvin Sarff
Blaine Melvin Sarff, 91, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. He was born April 24, 1921, in Staples, Minn., to Melvin and Marie (Brever) Sarff. Blaine served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate First Class. He moved to Cloquet in 1955 and worked as a board operator for Conoco Refinery in Wrenshall until his retirement. Blaine had been a member of the Scanlon Volunteer Fire Department and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet.
