Blaine Melvin Sarff, 91, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. He was born April 24, 1921, in Staples, Minn., to Melvin and Marie (Brever) Sarff. Blaine served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate First Class. He moved to Cloquet in 1955 and worked as a board operator for Conoco Refinery in Wrenshall until his retirement. Blaine had been a member of the Scanlon Volunteer Fire Department and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet.

John Manton Upton Thompson, 79, of Moose Lake, Minn., died Nov. 22, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake. He was born Aug. 20, 1933, at Mahtowa, Minn., the only son born to Roy and Ida Thompson. John graduated from Cloquet High School in 1952. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Mississippi, Florida and Alaska. John was employed at Chief Theater in Cloquet, First National Bank in Cloquet, the Art Institute and Hornblower and Weeks in Chicago. He returned to Duluth, Minn., where he was employed by the Marine Museum and The Depot. John was a member of the Swedish Cultural Society, Carlton County Historical Society, and was a board member of the Food Shelf. He lived in Moose Lake after retirement.

Donald A. Wilton Sr., 76, of Brookston, Minn., passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at the Silver Bay Veterans Home. He was born Nov. 12, 1936, in Duluth, Minn., to Thomas and Olga (Erickson) Wilton and graduated from Brookston High School in 1956. Don served in the United States Army and was a lifelong Brookston resident. He owned and operated the Brookston Garbage Service for over 30 years and also installed septic systems. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Milberger on June 17, 1967, in Brookston. He had many interests including playing pool with his family, shooting archery in the club he helped start in Brookston, and attempting to fish on Lake Superior (which never worked). Don never turned away from someone who needed help, whether they were family or friends. Even if it meant not charging someone for pick-ups that mom didn't know about. He was well known for his gift of gab and the ability to take a five-hour route and turn it into eight hours. He will be missed by all who ever had the pleasure to meet and talk with him.

She grew up with her three siblings, John (Debbie) of Cloquet, Paul (Jodi) of Barnum, Minn., and Suzie (Mike) of Superior, Wis., on Big Lake west of Cloquet. Sandie brought great joy to all those she knew. An ordained minister in Spiritual Science Foundation, she presided over many weddings and funerals. Strong in her faith, Sandie was eternally optimistic and always willing to help others. A daughter, sister, wife, mother, minister, friend and girlfriend, Sandie loved interacting with others. She lived in Cloquet, Colorado Springs, Colo., Esko, Minn., Island Lake in Duluth, Minn., and most recently Moose Lake, Minn., during her life. She was a waitress, skilled crocheter, and she shared a passion for the holidays, in particular Christmas. Among her proudest moments was graduating from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College as an over-50 college student and being ordained a minister in Montreal, Canada.
