John Manton Upton Thompson
John Manton Upton Thompson, 79, of Moose Lake, Minn., died Nov. 22, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake. He was born Aug. 20, 1933, at Mahtowa, Minn., the only son born to Roy and Ida Thompson. John graduated from Cloquet High School in 1952. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Mississippi, Florida and Alaska. John was employed at Chief Theater in Cloquet, First National Bank in Cloquet, the Art Institute and Hornblower and Weeks in Chicago. He returned to Duluth, Minn., where he was employed by the Marine Museum and The Depot. John was a member of the Swedish Cultural Society, Carlton County Historical Society, and was a board member of the Food Shelf. He lived in Moose Lake after retirement.

Lumberjacks start season with new coach and tough competition
The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team is already on the ice and in full swing, with a new coach and plenty of optimism for the season ahead. Former Moose Lake Area girls coach Lance Horvat takes over the program this winter, replacing Mike Bushey, and while he learns about his players, he knows there is a tradition to uphold.
