Political campaign signs not permitted on state highway rights of way
Placement of campaign signs and other unauthorized objects in state highway rights of way is prohibited under Minnesota State Statute 160.27, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. In addition, campaign signs may not be placed on private property outside of the right of way limits without landowner consent.

Leroy C. Starkey
Leroy C. Starkey, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. Leroy was born Oct. 13, 1926, in St. James, Minn., to Clara and Clement Starkey. He was in the Navy during World War II. Leroy hauled lumber on the North Shore, drove bus, worked for Northwest Paper and the Potlatch Corporation, retiring in 1988. Leroy enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, snowmobiling, camping and playing games.

Dr. Randolph I. Johnson
Dr. Randolph "Randy" Irving Johnson, 92, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. He was born April 15, 1920, in Cloquet to August and Agnes (Sandstrom) Johnson. Randolph served his country as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and flew 35 combat missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross Award. He was united in marriage to Pauline Goodwin on Jan. 4, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa. Randolph worked as an optometrist in Cloquet from 1949-1985. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Zioneers; Dalles Masonic Lodge #181 A.F. & A.M.; the Golden K Kiwanis Club; Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979; Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262; and the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He also loved hunting and fishing.

Long-time Cloquet resident Ann MacConnachie has preserved a timeless bit of area history. In a document she wrote and recently presented to the Fond du Lac Cultural Center and Museum, MacConnachie details how a group of women from Cloquet saw a need that existed on the Fond du Lac Reservation 50 years ago – and went all the way to the nation’s Capitol to help remedy it.

Arvid Axel Konu
Arvid Axel Konu, 96, of Cloquet, Minn., and formerly of Esko, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. The son of Matt and Laura Konu, Arvid was born in Thomson Township on Jan. 24, 1916. Through the years, Arvid had been employed at Konu Dairy, Universal Atlas Cement Plant, was head of maintenance for Esko Schools, and drove for Kolar Chevrolet. He served as Carlton County Commissioner and was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko and the Esko Historical Society. Arvid enjoyed vacationing in Galveston, Texas, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

‘Flooding the rink’ takes on new meaning
Last week, Esko community members started dismantling the hocky shelter, located at 62 Canosia Road in Esko. The shelter suffered significant damage from flood waters in June, leaving behind mold and other problems would likely translate into a building that would have to be condemned if left alone. Donations in support of the shelter can be sent to the Esko Youth Hockey Association, Republic Bank, 3 Thomson Road, Esko, MN 55733.

Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn
Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn, 95, of Carlton, Minn., formerly of Ely, Minn., passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born Nov. 2, 1916, to Charles W. and Bessie (Ellsworth) Keuhn in Mercer County, Mo. He attended grade school in Missouri, North Dakota and Minnesota. In the summer of 1935 and again in the winter of 1936-1937 Ken was enlisted with the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Minnesota and the state of Washington. While working on his sister's farm near Thief River Falls he met the girl he was looking for - Ruth Myhrer - and married her on Nov. 25, 1939. They moved to Ely in 1951 where he worked in logging and mine construction. He retired from DNR Fisheries in 1978 after 16 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, hobby farming and wood crafts in retirement. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Ely, Ely Senior Citizens and Ely Garden Club.

Eugene V. Stowell
Eugene "Gene" V. Stowell, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at Essentia Health in Duluth, Minn., with his family by his side. He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Browerville, Minn., to Clyde and Lila (Johnson) Stowell. He grew up on a small farm south of Brainerd, Minn., and attended a one-room schoolhouse through seventh grade. Because of his achievements, he was allowed to skip eighth grade and graduated from Brainerd High School in 1943 at the age of 16. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad before enlisting in the Merchant Marines in 1944, serving his country until the end of World War II. He rented a truck to haul cattle and worked in a sporting goods store before becoming a meat cutter for National Tea Company in 1947. Gene enjoyed a 14-year career with National Tea managing meat departments in Brainerd, Appleton, Little Falls, Ironwood, Mich., and Duluth before moving to Minneapolis, Minn., to supervise 27 supermarkets, eventually being placed in charge of produce for 143 stores.
