Barbara Lee Painter
Barbara L. Painter, 63, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her family. She was born July 20, 1949, in Ashland, Wis., to Robert and Evelyn (Warren) Willoughby and graduated from Iron River High School, the last class before the high school closed. Barb was united in marriage to Dennis S. Painter on Sept. 17, 1971, in Cloquet and she worked at Diamond Brands for 21 years retiring as safety director. Barb was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, worked with the youth, Alanon, and also with Alateen Children. She was also a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Auxiliary of Cloquet and the Iron River American Legion Auxiliary. Barb loved to sew, made rag dolls and doll clothes and repaired the neighbor kids' clothes for hugs.

Michael L. Lizotte, 45, of Lindstrom, Minn., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012. He was born May 13, 1967, graduated from Cloquet High School (1986) and St. Cloud State University and obtained his Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota. Mike was currently a teacher at North Branch School District and a former teacher at Pine City School District. He coached hockey, tennis and baseball, and worked with youth at Lakes Free Church, was an FCA Camp coach and led Bible study and prayer time at North Branch School. Mike enjoyed tennis, hockey, golf, boating, fishing and spending time with Lisa, the boys and all their friends.

Ruth Johanna Ezell
Ruth J. Ezell, 91, of Carlton, Minn., passed away on Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2012, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her loving family. She was born Ruth Johanna Lundquist to Adolph and Alma (Mannisto) Lundquist on June 24, 1921, in Duluth. She was raised in Duluth and later moved to New York Mills, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1939. Ruth went attended Hibbing Junior College for two years before going on to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her education was interrupted by the attack on Pearl Harbor and declaration of World War II. She enlisted in the United States Army where she served as Chief Radio Operator. Ruth later continued her education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She was employed as a laboratory technician by St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth and later as an educator at both the Moose Lake School District and Carlton School District from where she retired in 1984.

Harold Edward Wilkins
Harold E. Wilkins, 89, of Wrenshall, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Shevlin, Minn., to John and Agnes Wilkins. Harold served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army during World War II. He moved to the Wrenshall area in 1964 and worked as a lineman for numerous contractors and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Harold also worked as a farmer and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall.

James "Jim" F. Vnuk, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Cloquet to John and Isabelle (Schreiber) Vnuk. In high school, Jim was very athletic and played on the football, track and basketball teams. Jim served in the United States Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate.

Dennis L. House
Dennis L. House, 72, of Baxter, Minn., died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at his home. He was born Feb. 11, 1940, in Cloquet, Minn., the son of Lester and Theresa (Gray) House. After high school, Denny married Karel Franklin on Dec. 6, 1958. He started working for Northwest Paper Company in Cloquet before being transferred to Potlatch in Brainerd in 1963 as a coater supervisor and later, maintenance coordinator. In 1996, Denny retired, but he stayed busy. He enjoyed woodworking, maintaining his yard, and going camping with friends. He was an avid Nascar fan. He volunteered for the Elks and was also a trustee. He did everything but play golf. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and friend to everyone who entered his life. We've always been amazed by his courage, strength and determination but never so much as in the past few months during his illness. He led by example and was admired by all.

Marie H. Kiefer, 92, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. She was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Bloomington, Ill., to Carl and Ida Mae Paneitz. Marie was united in marriage to Clarence Kiefer on Jan. 14, 1939.

Franklin C. Zimmerman
Franklin Charles Zimmerman, 99, of Carlton, Minn., and formerly of McGregor, Minn., died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born July 30, 1913, in Corydon, Iowa, to Lloyd and Elnora (Edwards) Zimmerman. Frank was united in marriage to Clotilde "Tillie" Virginia Golden on July 11, 1936, in Aitkin, Minn. He worked as a turkey and beef cattle farmer and was a school bus driver for McGregor Schools for 31 years. Frank served on the Jevne Township Board and was the township assessor for 45 years. He was a member of the McGregor Lions Club and the McGregor United Methodist Church. He will be sadly missed and was loved by many.

Martin Hovde
Martin Hovde, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born Oct. 20, 1926, in Walker, Minn., to Arne and Anna Hovde. He graduated from Walker High School in 1945. Martin served in the United States Army during World War II. On June 21, 1947, he married Charlotte Hunt in Palisade, Minn. Martin worked as the postmaster at Ah Gwah Ching for several years. He drove truck for Eddy's Bread in Floodwood and Grand Rapids, Minn. He also managed the Holiday Station Store in Grand Rapids. In 1967 he moved to Cloquet where he managed the Cloquet Holiday Station Store until 1988. He then worked at Alaspa Gas Station until retiring in 2006 at the age of 80.

Willow River prison program aims to graduate model citizens
The Willow River Challenge Incarceration Program, or CIP, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. CIP is a voluntary program for inmates who meet certain statutory and department requirements. If they successfully complete the CIP program, those inmates can get up to four years off their prison sentences.
