Gerald 'Jerry' Lee Nelson
Gerald "Jerry" Lee Nelson, 66, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 13, 1946, to Edwin and Eva (Curtis) Nelson. Jerry worked as a truck driver for Brenny-Dahl Block Company and Ready Mix in Duluth for many years. He loved playing bingo at the Black Bear Casino, water skiing in his younger years, hunting and fishing, living at Chub Lake in Carlton since 1994, and especially spending time with family and grandkids.

Diane Marie House, 71, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at her home. She was born May 22, 1941, in Beaver Township, Minn., to Arne and Artura (Jackson) Liikala. Diane loved making crafts, bowling, fishing and especially traveling and following her grandson's horse racing careers. She was also a member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Auxiliary in Carlton, Minn.

Donald Morton Erickson
Donald M. Erickson, 75, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Cloquet to John E. and Inga H. (Jokela) Erickson. Donald served his country in the United States Navy as a radioman. He was united in marriage to MaryAnn Novacinski on March 28, 1959, in Carlton, Minn. Donald retired from Potlatch Corporation as a pipefitter and was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet. He enjoyed gardening and baking (especially his breads and rolls), and was a great husband, fabulous dad and wonderful grandfather.

Lorraine Marie (Lawrence) Brattlof, 92, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Lighthouse of Cloquet. She was born Oct. 28, 1919, in Thompson, Minn., to Frank and Mary (Gagne) Lawrence. She attended Carlton Public Schools. Lorraine was united in marriage to Kenneth Brattlof on July 18, 1942. She enjoyed spending time with her family, needlework, collecting bird figurines and cooking. Lorraine was always there to help others.

Doris M. Hargan
Doris M. Hargan, 79, of Mounds, Ill., peacefully left this earth on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012. She was born June 22, 1933, the daughter of Eino Esaeas and Helmi Wilhelmina (Wiita) Ikola at home on the family's small dairy farm, located in a Finnish community in rural Esko, Minn. She and Harold David Hargan were married July 8, 1955, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mound City, Ill. Doris was a graduate of Esko High School in Thomson Township, where she was a cheerleader for the "Esko Eskomos." She continued her education in Duluth, Minn., and then began her 44-year career as an X-ray technician in 1953 at St. Mary's hospital in Cairo, Ill., and thereafter served in a variety of roles at the Community Health Clinic in Cairo, Ill. She retired in 2011, having dedicated 58 years in service to others.

Second defendant in Cromwell murder case pleads guilty
CARLTON – Rachel Defoe testified Friday in Carlton County Court that she didn’t know anyone was going to be hurt, she didn’t hear the gunshots and her boyfriend didn’t immediately tell her that he cold-bloodedly shot a Cromwell couple to death in their home after robbing them, but she admitted she was involved.

Barbara Lee Painter
Barbara L. Painter, 63, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her family. She was born July 20, 1949, in Ashland, Wis., to Robert and Evelyn (Warren) Willoughby and graduated from Iron River High School, the last class before the high school closed. Barb was united in marriage to Dennis S. Painter on Sept. 17, 1971, in Cloquet and she worked at Diamond Brands for 21 years retiring as safety director. Barb was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, worked with the youth, Alanon, and also with Alateen Children. She was also a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Auxiliary of Cloquet and the Iron River American Legion Auxiliary. Barb loved to sew, made rag dolls and doll clothes and repaired the neighbor kids' clothes for hugs.
