Life gets back to normal one step at a time in Thomson
For many people, the flash floods that washed over the Northland in June only meant a couple days of difficulty getting to work or a damp basement. For others, like Mick and Carole Balow – who were evacuated from their Thomson home the morning of June 20 – it was a boat back home and a couple weeks without running water once they got there.

In Our Own Backyard…Cranberries, stuffing - and pasties?
Sometimes my husband calls them pasties (pay-sties) and sometimes he calls them pasties (paa-sties). But somehow, the word “pasties,” pronounced as it was meant to be pronounced when referring to the popular little meat pies, is never quite the first thing out of his mouth.

Disputes in gay-marriage states similar to Minnesota debate
Gay marriage remains divisive in states that allow it, with arguments that sound a lot like what Minnesotans are hearing as they consider a proposed constitutional amendment on the subject. Some see allowing gay marriages to be nothing more than allowing gays and lesbians to exercise the rights they deserve, but others say the marriages hurt society.

Christopher Michael East
Christopher Michael East, 26, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012. Chris was born in Brainerd, Minn., and graduated from Cloquet High School in 2004. Chris worked for Superior Security and Surveillance Systems in Chanhassen, Minn. He traveled the United States and marveled at all the beautiful sites. He soon realized how small the world really was and became much more appreciative of the "small town" in which he grew up. During his travels, Chris would seek out many of the featured restaurants on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" and text pictures home of the famous food. He took the opportunity to be a "tourist" on his travels and shared many stories about the sites he and his co-workers saw, especially those with his cousin Andy.
