Richard "Rocky" R. Kolodge, 83, a lifelong resident of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. He was born July 20, 1929, in Cloquet to Joseph and Helen (Berlik) Kolodge. Rocky graduated from Cloquet High School and was a star athlete in numerous sports including football, basketball, baseball, track, and other extra-curricular activities. He loved sports of all kinds, Polish polka music, walking, and riding a bike.

The world lost generosity personified on Dec. 10, 2012, with the sudden passing of Paula J. Francisco, 62, of Cloquet, Minn. Paula was born in Cloquet on Nov. 20, 1950, to Clayton and Audrey Smith. A lifelong Cloquet resident and Cloquet High School graduate, Paula earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She joined the Carlton County 9-1-1 team as a dispatcher, helping save the lives of both strangers and friends for the last 21 years. Paula's ability to handle stress under fire, in addition to her calming demeanor, made her an ever-constant source of comfort for those in need, and a well-respected member of the Carlton County law enforcement family.

Mathilda “Tillie” Valley, 95, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, in Community Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on Aug. 29, 1917, in Cold Spring, Minn., to Michael and Anna (Notch) Lardy. She married Leo Valley on April 19, 1939, in St. Cloud, Minn. Tillie was a resident at Cloquet Lighthouse for eight years.

Timothy "Tim" Gerald Couture, 53, of Cloquet, Minn., passed Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by his family. He was born June 1, 1959, in Duluth to Gerald and Phyllis (Carino) Couture and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1977. Tim was a loving father and avid fisherman and hunter. He was looking forward to an upcoming pheasant trip to South Dakota. Tim loved playing hockey for over 50 years, was a great sports fan, and also skied in two Birkebeiner ski races. He was a proud member of the Thunderbird Motorcycle Club and was also a member of Queen of Peace Parish. Tim was an owner of PAW Communications and had worked as a painter/contractor for Couture Brothers, and also for Minorca Mine.

She was born Sept. 11, 1919, in Cloquet to Carl and Mary (Delarosby) Johnson and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1938. Lois worked for Northwest Paper Company and also as a clerk for the Ben Franklin store and the S&L store. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, National Catholic Society of Foresters, Spring Lake Birthday Club, and the Legion of Mary. Lois was also a volunteer for the Carlton Nursing Home and Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life.

Anna Marie Locke, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Cloquet to Vincent and Anna (Dufault) Lemieux and was united in marriage to Frederick "Fred" L. Locke on Aug. 3, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cloquet. Anna worked in the state of Washington for the government during World War II. She was the secretary for Sacred Heart Catholic Church and also an accountant for the Fond du Lac Reservation, and retired as director of food distribution for Fond du Lac. She was a lifelong member of Queen of Peace Parish, and a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Catholic Foresters, the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Auxiliary, and was a volunteer for Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn.

She loved spending time at the family cabin at Prairie Lake which they had for over 22 years.

James "Jim" F. Vnuk, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Cloquet to John and Isabelle (Schreiber) Vnuk. In high school, Jim was very athletic and played on the football, track and basketball teams. Jim served in the United States Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate.

Leroy C. Starkey, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. Leroy was born Oct. 13, 1926, in St. James, Minn., to Clara and Clement Starkey. He was in the Navy during World War II. Leroy hauled lumber on the North Shore, drove bus, worked for Northwest Paper and the Potlatch Corporation, retiring in 1988. Leroy enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, snowmobiling, camping and playing games.

Eugene V. Stowell
Eugene "Gene" V. Stowell, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at Essentia Health in Duluth, Minn., with his family by his side. He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Browerville, Minn., to Clyde and Lila (Johnson) Stowell. He grew up on a small farm south of Brainerd, Minn., and attended a one-room schoolhouse through seventh grade. Because of his achievements, he was allowed to skip eighth grade and graduated from Brainerd High School in 1943 at the age of 16. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad before enlisting in the Merchant Marines in 1944, serving his country until the end of World War II. He rented a truck to haul cattle and worked in a sporting goods store before becoming a meat cutter for National Tea Company in 1947. Gene enjoyed a 14-year career with National Tea managing meat departments in Brainerd, Appleton, Little Falls, Ironwood, Mich., and Duluth before moving to Minneapolis, Minn., to supervise 27 supermarkets, eventually being placed in charge of produce for 143 stores.
