Cloquet to face Mound-Westonka in quarterfinals
Returning to the state tournament for the first time since their school’s debut in 2002, Cloquet will open this week’s Minnesota state softball tournament against Mound-Westonka in a Class AA quarterfinal set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Win or lose, the Lumberjacks will play at 7 p.m. that same night.

Stella Christine Hilinski, 87, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, at Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1942, St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn., and the University of Minnesota. Stella worked as a nurse for over 42 years, and was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Special Olympians share fun, high fives
Close to 250 people from all over northern Minnesota participated in the Special Olympics competition in Cloquet Saturday, May 19, running and walking around the Cloquet High School track, throwing softballs and shot puts, making long jumps and – most importantly – exchanging high fives and hugs in support of one another.

Jay Kendall Pederson
Jay K. Pederson, 49, a lifelong resident of Cloquet, Minn., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn. He was born Oct. 30, 1962, in Cloquet to Ramon and Darlyne (Johnson) Pederson and graduated from Cloquet High School. Jay had worked for Cloquet Sanitary Service and currently was the custodian at the sports center for the Cloquet Tribal Center. He served on the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department for a number of years and enjoyed hunting and going to the shack. Jay was a very caring man with a big heart.
