Family’s possessions go up in smoke
According to Esko Fire Chief Jeff Juntunen, someone reported smoke in the area at 2:01 a.m. Thursday, but by the time Carlton County deputies found the source of the smoke, the house at 110 Rio Drive had burned “right to the slab.” Fortunately, there were no injuries or loss of life.

Sexual, domestic abuse victims face referrals to other counties
If a victim of abuse dials the number listed in the phone book for the Carlton County Sexual and Domestic Abuse Program, he or she will receive a message stating the phone number has been disconnected. That’s because as of Oct. 15, the program was discontinued due to lack of funding.

Jill Hatfield, executive directior of Volunteer Services of Carlton County, wants people to know there is at least one easy option available to flood victims: apply for up to a $500 grant from the Flood Relief Fund to be used toward appliances or building materials (or for reimbursement for such items, with a receipt).

At this point in time, Carlton County is conservatively estimated to have sustained $105-135 million in damages. Those numbers don’t take into account personal property items outside of infrastructure, such a houses, walls, carpeting and floors, so that number is expected to grow.
