Bertha Henrietta Hay
Bertha Henrietta Hay, 92, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, at the Lighthouse in Cloquet, Minn., where she was living. She was born to John J. and Johannah E. (Van Hout) Tillman on July 21, 1920, in Milbank, S.D., where she grew up. Bertha married Sherman C. Hay on Sept. 21, 1940, in St. Paul, Minn., where they lived for a short time. They returned to Big Stone City, S.D., where they farmed for many years, and were members of the St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Church. From 1975 to 1986 they were custodians at the Big Stone City School, where they "grand-parented" many children. In 1993 they moved to Cloquet, where they were members of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Mary Ann Wehr
Mary Ann Wehr, 82, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2013, at home. She was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Cloquet to John and Frances Zasoski. Mary Ann was united in marriage to Donald L. Wehr on Aug. 20, 1949. She worked as a nurse's aide at Nopeming Nursing Home for many years and was a member of the Jehovah's Witness since 1973.

Shawn Marie Kaarbo (aka Shawn Marie Melton and Shawn Marie Strandberg), 49, of Barnum pleaded guilty in Carlton County Court last Wednesday to one count of voting while ineligible. The charge, which was originally filed as a felony, was sentenced as a gross misdemeanor according to the plea agreement.

Mary Leone Plante, 70, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. She was born Nov. 28, 1942, in Cloquet to Emil and Tyne (Salo) Plante. Mary had worked for the Northwest Paper Company, as a cook for the Cloquet Middle School, and served on the Carlton County Women's Advocacy.

She was a school aide at Leach Elementary School, where she was affectionately known as “Moonie.” Audrey loved to spend time with her family.

Richard Joseph Prevost
Richard "Dick" Joseph Prevost, 71, of Kettle River, Minn., passed away April 23, 2013, with his family by his side, after losing his 12-year battle to prostate cancer. Dick was born to Richard Joseph and Evelyn (Ward) Prevost Sr. on April 10, 1942, in Cloquet, Minn. He was a 1960 graduate of Cloquet High School and a longtime employee of Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company in Duluth, Minn. He also worked for and retired from Edina Realty. Dick was an avid reader, painter, Catholic Church choir member, "garage saler" and gardener. He loved to hunt, fish, tell jokes and stories. "How big did you say those deer and fish were?" Though he had all girls, everything he was passionate about has been passed down through the generations.

Rodney Herbert Weiler
Rodney Herbert Weiler, 81, of Esko, Minn., passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn. He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Duluth to Herbert and Ruth (Halvorson) Weiler. Rod served as an engineer in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, and was united in marriage to Annie Lindquist on Oct. 9, 1954, in Proctor, Minn. He worked numerous occupations including a fireman on the D.M.I.R. Railroad, truck driver for International Teamsters Union 346, farmer, and custodian and lawn caretaker for the Esko town hall and park. Rod loved raising his angus cattle, taking sauna, refurbishing John Deere tractors, and taking care of his large garden. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, helped numerous neighbors and other farmers with his knowledge, and was a self-taught veterinarian. Rod was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church where he also volunteered numerous hours for church projects, dinners and other events.

Selma Emelia (Spikberg) Arbuckle, 94, of Saginaw, Minn., passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 20, 1918, in Amboy, Minn., to William and Augusta (Dallmann) Janke. Selma was the oldest member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Saginaw, and the last member of the first group of Lutheran Missionary Women's League.
