Science fair students advance to state, national competitions
Forty-nine Cloquet Middle School students and 18 Cloquet High School students (along with their teacher/mentors Cynthia Welsh, Cynthia Edwardson, Joe Nicol, Logan Pallin, Holly Pellerin, Diane Mueller, Joan Hakala, Scott Welsh and Tim Anderson) attended the 60th Annual Northeast Minnesota Regional and American Indian Science and Engineering Fair held on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus.

Students at the Cloquet Area Alternative Education Program spent last Thursday doing activities based on the National Day of Silence, to bring awareness to GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual) individuals — or anyone with differences — who have been “silenced” by name-calling, bullying, etc. Some stories shared their own stories of bullying or abuse.

Rodney Herbert Weiler
Rodney Herbert Weiler, 81, of Esko, Minn., passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn. He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Duluth to Herbert and Ruth (Halvorson) Weiler. Rod served as an engineer in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, and was united in marriage to Annie Lindquist on Oct. 9, 1954, in Proctor, Minn. He worked numerous occupations including a fireman on the D.M.I.R. Railroad, truck driver for International Teamsters Union 346, farmer, and custodian and lawn caretaker for the Esko town hall and park. Rod loved raising his angus cattle, taking sauna, refurbishing John Deere tractors, and taking care of his large garden. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, helped numerous neighbors and other farmers with his knowledge, and was a self-taught veterinarian. Rod was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church where he also volunteered numerous hours for church projects, dinners and other events.
