The four-day camp itself will be a lesson in all things Ojibwe, from attitude to native crafts to tanning hides, plus canoe races and other contests that teach skills valued by the traditional Ojibwe culture.

When last June’s flood devastated much of Carlton County, in its wake were water-filled basements, ruined belongings, displaced residents and a mountain of debt. In the hustle and bustle of trying to mop up, it would have been easy to overlook the smallest of casualties — the children whose lives were disrupted in a very real and significant way.

Jay Cooke may be open for business – sort of – in two months
The summer season may have been a wash for Jay Cooke State Park thanks to massive flood damage, but officials are hoping to salvage part of the fall and winter seasons at the popular Carlton County park. If all goes as planned, visitors should be able to drive into Jay Cooke State Park from Carlton by the end of October.

Cloquet Mayor Bruce Ahlgren is advising residents whose homes , garages, and basements flooded to start on cleanup work immediately – but not before documenting the damage with photographs and lists. Ahlgren said the industrial landfill in Cloquet has offered to dispose of debris from the flood for free, as long as people have identification that shows their Cloquet address.

Campgrounds at Jay Cooke, Cloquet’s Spafford Park and Moose Lake had to be evacuated. And the beloved swinging bridge is severely damaged.
