Local childcare providers vow to continue fight against union
Minnesota legislators approved a bill allowing in-home childcare providers — licensed and unlicensed — and personal care attendants that will allow for an election among providers if unions meet certain thresholds of support. If in-home childcare providers and personal care attendants (PCAs) decided to form a union, the union would have exclusive rights to negotiate on their behalf with the state.

Shirley Marie Defoe
Shirley Marie Defoe, “Giizhigookwe,” 69, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 12:35 p.m. with her son at her side. Although her passing was unexpected, she went peacefully and without pain. Shirley worked at Conwed, UMD School of Medicine, Bemidji State College as Director for Native Americans in Medicine, and retired from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in 2007. She also served on the Cloquet School Board.

Dewey Dupuis Jr. hasn’t played a game of organized football for more than two years, but the 19-year-old hasn’t lost his touch. “It’s my favorite sport,” said Dupuis, a 2011 graduate of Fond du Lac Ojibwe School and now starting free safety for the inaugural Carlton County Stampede semi-professional football team this summer.
