Shirley Marie Defoe, “Giizhigookwe,” 69, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 12:35 p.m. with her son at her side. Although her passing was unexpected, she went peacefully and without pain. Shirley worked at Conwed, UMD School of Medicine, Bemidji State College as Director for Native Americans in Medicine, and retired from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in 2007. She also served on the Cloquet School Board.

Myrtle M. Beardsley, 82, of Proctor and Duluth, Minn., passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness, with her family at her side. She was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Bear Lake, Rusk County, Wis., to Wendall "Hap" and Flossie Gillett. On July 3, 1959, Myrtle married Carol Beardsley in Nashua, Iowa, at “The Little Brown Church in the Vale.” They moved to Duluth in 1966 from Rice Lake, Wis. Myrtle was active as a den mother with the Boy Scouts and as an advisor with the Junior Auxiliary of the American Legion.

Bertha Henrietta Hay, 92, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, at the Lighthouse in Cloquet, Minn., where she was living. She was born to John J. and Johannah E. (Van Hout) Tillman on July 21, 1920, in Milbank, S.D., where she grew up. Bertha married Sherman C. Hay on Sept. 21, 1940, in St. Paul, Minn., where they lived for a short time. They returned to Big Stone City, S.D., where they farmed for many years, and were members of the St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Church. From 1975 to 1986 they were custodians at the Big Stone City School, where they "grand-parented" many children. In 1993 they moved to Cloquet, where they were members of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
