Donald George Panger
Donald George Panger, 81 of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, at Benedictine Health Care in Duluth, Minn. He was born Nov. 17, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., to Seonal and Germaine (Valley) Panger. Don served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. He worked as an accountant for the Potlatch Corporation for over 28 years, retiring in 1977, and also for Cloquet Transit for over 14 years, retiring in 1996. Don was involved with the Boy Scouts, served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus, was past president of the Cloquet Exchange Club, Cloquet Rotary Club and Golden K Kiwanis Club, and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chamber Business Operators Association. He served on the Cloquet City Council for 14 years and as mayor for six years.

Lawrence LeRoy Finifrock
Lawrence LeRoy Finifrock, 97, of Barnum, Minn., died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born July 13, 1914, in Yakima Valley, Wash., to Albert and Mary Finifrock. The family homesteaded in Montana from 1917 until 1920. They moved to New Underwood, S.D., living there until 1933. Lawrence married Marion Hill on March 27, 1938, in Barnum. He dairy farmed until 1967. Lawrence also worked for the Soo Line Railroad, Diamond Match and the Moose Lake State Hospital before retiring in 1980. After retirement he lived on Crystal Lake in Mahtowa, Minn., before moving to Chub Lake in 1986.

Leroy C. Starkey, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. Leroy was born Oct. 13, 1926, in St. James, Minn., to Clara and Clement Starkey. He was in the Navy during World War II. Leroy hauled lumber on the North Shore, drove bus, worked for Northwest Paper and the Potlatch Corporation, retiring in 1988. Leroy enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, snowmobiling, camping and playing games.

Norman Louis Horner
Norman Louis Horner, 61, of Fairbanks, Alaska, has come home to our Lord. He peacefully passed away on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Norman was born in Cloquet, Minn., to John and Mary(Watson) Horner on June 22, 1951. He graduated from Barnum High School in 1969. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving eight years. Norman moved to Fairbanks in 1981, working on Ft. Wainwright Army base where he retired from.

Robert William Haglund, 69, of Cloquet, Minn., died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, in his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1942, in Cloquet to William and Alice Haglund. Bob grew up in Blackhoof and graduated from Carlton High School in 1960. He worked for Northwest Paper, Potlatch and Sappi before retiring in 2003 after 42 years. He was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club. Bob loved to golf at Grandview with his best friend Steve Bottila and was a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan.

Edwin F. Erickson, 84, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, April 8, 2013, at home in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by family. He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Cloquet to Edwin and Ilma (Rautio) Erickson. Ed graduated from Cloquet Senior High School in 1946, served in the United States Marine Corps, graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 1951 and was employed by Potlatch Corporation (formerly known as The Northwest Paper Company) for 38 years, retiring in 1991.

Shirley Marie Defoe, “Giizhigookwe,” 69, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 12:35 p.m. with her son at her side. Although her passing was unexpected, she went peacefully and without pain. Shirley worked at Conwed, UMD School of Medicine, Bemidji State College as Director for Native Americans in Medicine, and retired from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in 2007. She also served on the Cloquet School Board.

Vernon James Schlichting
Vernon James Schlichting, 80, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away very peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2012, in Community Memorial Hospital, Cloquet. He was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Royalton, Minn., and later moved with his family to Duluth, Minn. Vern was a young entrepreneur, selling Liberty magazines with his brother Al at the young age of 9-10. He then ran a successful shoe shine stand near the Greyhound Bus Depot for several years. Vern started his career with U.S. Steel at the age of 15. He worked as a crane operator, instrument repairman and foreman prior to his retirement at the age of 45. After retirement, he and his brother Al worked together repairing appliances. He also served in the United States Army. Vern loved the Minnesota Vikings and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He treasured his time spent at the hunting shack with his father, brother and nephews. His greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He loved his daughter, step-children, sons-in-law and grandchildren unconditionally and wholeheartedly. His family meant the world to him.

Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn
Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn, 95, of Carlton, Minn., formerly of Ely, Minn., passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born Nov. 2, 1916, to Charles W. and Bessie (Ellsworth) Keuhn in Mercer County, Mo. He attended grade school in Missouri, North Dakota and Minnesota. In the summer of 1935 and again in the winter of 1936-1937 Ken was enlisted with the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Minnesota and the state of Washington. While working on his sister's farm near Thief River Falls he met the girl he was looking for - Ruth Myhrer - and married her on Nov. 25, 1939. They moved to Ely in 1951 where he worked in logging and mine construction. He retired from DNR Fisheries in 1978 after 16 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, hobby farming and wood crafts in retirement. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Ely, Ely Senior Citizens and Ely Garden Club.

Donald Morton Erickson
Donald M. Erickson, 75, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Cloquet to John E. and Inga H. (Jokela) Erickson. Donald served his country in the United States Navy as a radioman. He was united in marriage to MaryAnn Novacinski on March 28, 1959, in Carlton, Minn. Donald retired from Potlatch Corporation as a pipefitter and was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet. He enjoyed gardening and baking (especially his breads and rolls), and was a great husband, fabulous dad and wonderful grandfather.
