A sign on the wall of Astrid Johnson’s kitchen reads, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Johnson takes that a bit more seriously than most.

In Our Own Backyard…Flying in the teeth of the gale
The gently whirling snowflakes of a few moments before turned into Ninja death stars that stung our eyes and bit into our skin, propelled by the velocity of the raging wind.

In Our Own Backyard...Shock and awe
The air was filled with tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. I found myself tiptoeing around on our hardwood floors, afraid that the sound of a good, solid footstep might ignite passions far beyond anything we were prepared to cope with. The two of us – Ken and I – were communicating at a near-whisper so we didn’t give away our strategical plan of attack prematurely. This was war.

In Our Own Backyard…Guess who’s coming to dinner?
I did a double take as I pulled my car into the driveway and glanced toward our front door. For there, peering through the outside of the screen and almost nose to nose with our two cats was a tiny orange and white kitten.

In Our Own Backyard….Winter weather leaves us high and dry
The ultimate blow came when my husband and I arrived home last Friday after five days out of town and discovered we didn’t have any water in our house.

In Our Own Backyard….The game is on!
It was the day of the Big Game. As we drove through the Minneapolis campus of our old alma mater, the University of Minnesota, last Saturday morning, it would have been hard to overlook the fact that it was Homecoming.

In Our Own Backyard…Warm weather is a world away
We awoke to the sound of doves cooing conversationally outside our window. The soft “whup, whup, whup” of the ceiling fan stirred the thin percale sheet that lay over us. And as I slid out of bed and into my sandals, I could already sense the heat of the day. By evening, we were stuck in the driveway....

In Our Own Backyard...Cats have nine lives - and six senses
Cats have an uncanny way of telling time. It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, but when 5:55 a.m. rolls around, one of our two cats will be sitting next to my pillow staring intently at me, while the other winds up and down the length of the bed purring lustily.

Our View…Fight fire with fire
A house fire is tragic no matter when it occurs, but when that fire was intentionally set, it is not only senseless but all that much more insidious.

Our View: Opinion can incite anger or action
Sometimes, when people finish reading the newspaper, they are angry. That’s OK. It means they’ve been challenged in some way, that the status quo has been disturbed, that the switch that ignites a passionate response has been flipped.

Our View...And the question is …?
Believe it or not, Election Day is a little more than a month away. Are you ready? We aren’t. There are a lot of questions to be asked between now and then, issues to be discussed and examined, candidate statements to be vetted and votes to be decided.

In Our Own Backyard….A mother’s instinct runs strong
With the first paddle stroke, I exhaled a long breath and felt myself begin to relax into the rhythm of the lake. It had been far too long since I’d been out there, and I needed the mindless energy of the paddle to bring me back into the flow of the natural world that we are lucky enough to call our back yard.
