Quinton R. Matuszak
Quinton Russell Matuszak, 44, of Kerrick, Minn., passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, in Wisconsin after a motorcycle accident. He was born Dec. 6, 1967, in Duluth, Minn., to Russell and Gretchen (Himango) Matuszak. Quinton graduated from Esko High School in 1986 and worked as a sawyer (wood cutter). He is a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Quinton was an incredibly loving and giving man and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Donald Edward Puotinen
Donald Edward Puotinen, 86, of Esko, Minn., died Saturday, June 9, 2012, in Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet, Minn. Born in 1926 in Thomson Township, Don was the son of Edward and Lempi Puotinen. He served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in Europe during the end of the war from March 1945 to July 1946. Don was a lift operator at Potlatch and retired after 33 years of employment. When his sons were young, Don was very active in Boy Scouts. He had also been an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko and was a member of American Legion Post 262 in Cloquet for 58 years.

Arvid Axel Konu
Arvid Axel Konu, 96, of Cloquet, Minn., and formerly of Esko, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. The son of Matt and Laura Konu, Arvid was born in Thomson Township on Jan. 24, 1916. Through the years, Arvid had been employed at Konu Dairy, Universal Atlas Cement Plant, was head of maintenance for Esko Schools, and drove for Kolar Chevrolet. He served as Carlton County Commissioner and was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko and the Esko Historical Society. Arvid enjoyed vacationing in Galveston, Texas, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Harold Edward Wilkins
Harold E. Wilkins, 89, of Wrenshall, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Shevlin, Minn., to John and Agnes Wilkins. Harold served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army during World War II. He moved to the Wrenshall area in 1964 and worked as a lineman for numerous contractors and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Harold also worked as a farmer and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall.

Muriel Adeline Johnson of Carlton, Minn., passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born April 18, 1920, in Cloquet, Minn., to Frank and Hannah (Peterson) Milberger. Muriel was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Johnson on Aug. 20, 1941, in Cloquet. Muriel and Kenny lived most of their life in Esko, Minn., but returned to Cloquet. Muriel worked at Wood Conversion in Cloquet and Garon Knitting Mills in Duluth, Minn. She was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Cloquet.

Faye Elaine McMillen, 83, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn. She was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Drayton, N.D., to William and Nannie (Bjerk) Johnson. Faye worked as a beautician and also as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. She was a member of the Carl Anderson American Legion Auxiliary, the Loyal Order of Moose Auxiliary, and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church. Faye enjoyed playing cribbage, smear, and bingo.

Roy Leon Asp, 88, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Floodwood, Minn., to Simon and Anna (Anderson) Asp. Roy was united in marriage to Vivian Roos on June 19, 1948. He worked as a salesman for Cutler-Magner, Huron Cement, and LaFarge. After his retirement, he also worked for Brenny-Dahl Block in Cloquet. Roy was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton, and was a former member of Dalles Masonic Lodge #181 A.F.&A.M. and the Scottish Rite in Duluth.

Barbara Lee Painter
Barbara L. Painter, 63, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her family. She was born July 20, 1949, in Ashland, Wis., to Robert and Evelyn (Warren) Willoughby and graduated from Iron River High School, the last class before the high school closed. Barb was united in marriage to Dennis S. Painter on Sept. 17, 1971, in Cloquet and she worked at Diamond Brands for 21 years retiring as safety director. Barb was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, worked with the youth, Alanon, and also with Alateen Children. She was also a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Auxiliary of Cloquet and the Iron River American Legion Auxiliary. Barb loved to sew, made rag dolls and doll clothes and repaired the neighbor kids' clothes for hugs.

Magnhild 'Munnie' Albertine Collander Skog
Magnhild "Munnie" Albertine Collander Skog, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 in Faith Haven Nursing Home, Carlton, Minn. She was born in Bayview Heights on Feb. 13, 1922, and graduated from Proctor High School in 1939. She married Edgar Skog on June 20, 1942, and lived on the family farm in Munger for the next 60-some years. Besides farming, Munnie also worked as a trucker for many years and also owned and operated Skog's Greenhouse and Floral. In later years she was a realtor with Sorenson Realty, working in the Cloquet, Minn., area. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor, Minn., from the age of 7 and of the many capacities she served in, singing in the choir was her favorite. She also sang in the American Legion Choir for over 25 years.

Rodney Herbert Weiler
Rodney Herbert Weiler, 81, of Esko, Minn., passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn. He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Duluth to Herbert and Ruth (Halvorson) Weiler. Rod served as an engineer in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, and was united in marriage to Annie Lindquist on Oct. 9, 1954, in Proctor, Minn. He worked numerous occupations including a fireman on the D.M.I.R. Railroad, truck driver for International Teamsters Union 346, farmer, and custodian and lawn caretaker for the Esko town hall and park. Rod loved raising his angus cattle, taking sauna, refurbishing John Deere tractors, and taking care of his large garden. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, helped numerous neighbors and other farmers with his knowledge, and was a self-taught veterinarian. Rod was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church where he also volunteered numerous hours for church projects, dinners and other events.

Dr. Randolph I. Johnson
Dr. Randolph "Randy" Irving Johnson, 92, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. He was born April 15, 1920, in Cloquet to August and Agnes (Sandstrom) Johnson. Randolph served his country as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and flew 35 combat missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross Award. He was united in marriage to Pauline Goodwin on Jan. 4, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa. Randolph worked as an optometrist in Cloquet from 1949-1985. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Zioneers; Dalles Masonic Lodge #181 A.F. & A.M.; the Golden K Kiwanis Club; Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979; Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262; and the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He also loved hunting and fishing.

Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn
Kenneth Woodrow Keuhn, 95, of Carlton, Minn., formerly of Ely, Minn., passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born Nov. 2, 1916, to Charles W. and Bessie (Ellsworth) Keuhn in Mercer County, Mo. He attended grade school in Missouri, North Dakota and Minnesota. In the summer of 1935 and again in the winter of 1936-1937 Ken was enlisted with the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Minnesota and the state of Washington. While working on his sister's farm near Thief River Falls he met the girl he was looking for - Ruth Myhrer - and married her on Nov. 25, 1939. They moved to Ely in 1951 where he worked in logging and mine construction. He retired from DNR Fisheries in 1978 after 16 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, hobby farming and wood crafts in retirement. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Ely, Ely Senior Citizens and Ely Garden Club.
