Pauline J. King, 88, of Duluth, Minn., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, in Sunnyside Health Center in Cloquet, Minn. She was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Nov. 9, 1924, to Albert and Jessie Smith, the oldest of three children. Pauline married Roger "Rod" King in 1946 in Las Vegas, Nev. They spent their lives in Duluth. Pauline was a very dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She generously gave her time to scouting, baseball, hunting and fishing. All of her time was for her family and friends.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Eleanor Josephine Johnson, 83, of St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of Esko and Sebeka, Minn., will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud. A private burial will take place at a later date. Eleanor died early Monday morning on Oct. 8, 2012, and joined the love of her life, Harvey. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud.

Robert “Bob” John Howden, 67, passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2012, while vacationing in Scottsdale, Ariz. Bob fought many battles with his health and did it with dignity and a very positive attitude. He never complained and was thankful for every day. Bob was born on June 11, 1945, to John and Helen (Lusk) Howden in Duluth, Minn. He graduated from Morgan Park High School and served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam. He graduated from CalPoly College and received his Master’s Degree from UMD. He enjoyed teaching for 30 years in the Cloquet School District. His favorite pastimes were golf, hunting, fishing and reading.

Bernice J. Bertrand, 86, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born April 1, 1926, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Stanley and Martha (Martichusti) Stine and graduated Valedictorian from Carlton High School in 1944. Bertha Henrietta Hay, 92, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, at the Lighthouse in Cloquet, Minn., where she was living. She was born to John J. and Johannah E. (Van Hout) Tillman on July 21, 1920, in Milbank, S.D., where she grew up. Bertha married Sherman C. Hay on Sept. 21, 1940, in St. Paul, Minn., where they lived for a short time. They returned to Big Stone City, S.D., where they farmed for many years, and were members of the St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Church. From 1975 to 1986 they were custodians at the Big Stone City School, where they "grand-parented" many children. In 1993 they moved to Cloquet, where they were members of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

James "Jim" J. Carroll, 71, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Cook, Minn. He was born March 13, 1941, in Austin, Minn., to Francis and Frances (Graves) Carroll and graduated from Pacelli High School in Austin in 1959. Jim served in the United States Air Force from January 1960 to October 1963. He was stationed in Shreveport, La., at Barksdale AFB for 3 ½ years. Upon completion of his military tour of duty, he returned to Austin and attended Austin Junior College. Jim was united in marriage to Patricia Harris at Queen of Angels Church in 1965. They resided in Bemidji, Minn., where he graduated from Bemidji State University in March 1968 with a degree in accounting.

Ruth J. Ezell, 91, of Carlton, Minn., passed away on Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2012, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her loving family. She was born Ruth Johanna Lundquist to Adolph and Alma (Mannisto) Lundquist on June 24, 1921, in Duluth. She was raised in Duluth and later moved to New York Mills, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1939. Ruth went attended Hibbing Junior College for two years before going on to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her education was interrupted by the attack on Pearl Harbor and declaration of World War II. She enlisted in the United States Army where she served as Chief Radio Operator. Ruth later continued her education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She was employed as a laboratory technician by St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth and later as an educator at both the Moose Lake School District and Carlton School District from where she retired in 1984.
