Sappi to invest $170 million in Cloquet mill
There was a day when turning wood into paper was considered modern technology. With last week’s announcement that Sappi Limited will invest $170 million in a capital improvement project in Cloquet, the local mill will soon be pivotal in turning wood into clothing. The newly announced project will convert the existing kraft pulp mill in Cloquet to production of chemical cellulose, used in the textile and consumer goods markets.

The Cloquet Police Department has fielded numerous complaints from the residents of that street about noise and debris from trucks entering and exiting the Sappi paper mill.

For 113 years, there’s been a mill in Cloquet making pulp for use in paper mills — but not much longer. The mill isn’t going anywhere and still will be making paper, and it still will be turning trees into pulp. But the pulp made by Sappi Fine Paper in the future will be made into clothing and baby wipes.

Henry W. Karsten, 38, Cloquet, Minn., died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview in Minneapolis, Minn. He was born on June 13, 1973, in Milaca, Minn. Henry graduated from Foley High School and later worked for Crystal Cabinets in Princeton, Minn., for 10 years. On May 15, 2004, Henry married Jody Gorham in Moose Lake, Minn. They lived in Split Rock Township and later moved to Cloquet where Henry worked at Sappi Fine Paper. Henry loved spending time with his family and was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, camping and four-wheeling. He was also an avid NASCAR fan.
