Blaine Melvin Sarff
Blaine Melvin Sarff, 91, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. He was born April 24, 1921, in Staples, Minn., to Melvin and Marie (Brever) Sarff. Blaine served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate First Class. He moved to Cloquet in 1955 and worked as a board operator for Conoco Refinery in Wrenshall until his retirement. Blaine had been a member of the Scanlon Volunteer Fire Department and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet.

Gertrude M. Mitchell, 81, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. She was born May 3, 1931, in National City, Calif. Gertrude was raised in California by her parents, Horace and Marie Johnson and Raymond and Helen Lamb. She worked as an administrative assistant for the United States Navy at North Island Naval Base for over 25 years. Gertrude has lived with her daughter Karen Murphy in Cloquet for the past eight years and she loved NASCAR racing and country music.

Harold E. Wilkins, 89, of Wrenshall, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Shevlin, Minn., to John and Agnes Wilkins. Harold served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army during World War II. He moved to the Wrenshall area in 1964 and worked as a lineman for numerous contractors and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Harold also worked as a farmer and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall.

She was born April 1, 1926, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Stanley and Martha (Martichusti) Stine and graduated Valedictorian from Carlton High School in 1944. Bernice was united in marriage to Donald Bertrand on Jan. 8, 1949, in Carlton, and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Carl F. Grangruth
Carl Ferdinand Grangruth, 80, of Moose Lake, Minn., passed away peacefully, Friday, March 8, 2013, at his home. He was born April 22, 1932, in Baudette, Minn., to Herman and Lydia (Johnson) Grangruth. Carl proudly served in the U.S. Army from March 1952 to March 1954 during the Korean Conflict. Carl was united in marriage to Beatrice Brigan on Feb. 2, 1985, in Cloquet. He was a life member of VFW Post #6206 of Menahga and VFW Post #3979 of Cloquet. Carl worked as a sandblaster and painter from coast to coast. He has worked in every state except Maine, Alaska and Hawaii. He retired from sandblasting in 1987 with siliceous and obstructive lung disease from sand, paint, chemicals, lead paint, etc. In later years, he built two new houses, remodeled five houses and a four-plex apartment building. Carl enjoyed working with wood and making furniture for his children and friends. In the winter months, Carl and Beatrice traveled to Arizona, California, Colorado and Florida. He loved deer hunting at his son's farm in Wadena, Minn., with his children and grandchildren. Carl especially liked visiting with his family and friends, playing cards and camping at Sturgeon Lake.
