Cody graduated from Esko High School in 2010 where he was an accomplished athlete and participated in track, golf and football. He received many awards including "The Hammer" for his leadership, skill, and strength on the field. Football was Cody's passion.

James "Jim" F. Vnuk, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Cloquet to John and Isabelle (Schreiber) Vnuk. In high school, Jim was very athletic and played on the football, track and basketball teams. Jim served in the United States Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate.

James "Jim" J. Carroll, 71, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Cook, Minn. He was born March 13, 1941, in Austin, Minn., to Francis and Frances (Graves) Carroll and graduated from Pacelli High School in Austin in 1959. Jim served in the United States Air Force from January 1960 to October 1963. He was stationed in Shreveport, La., at Barksdale AFB for 3 ½ years. Upon completion of his military tour of duty, he returned to Austin and attended Austin Junior College. Jim was united in marriage to Patricia Harris at Queen of Angels Church in 1965. They resided in Bemidji, Minn., where he graduated from Bemidji State University in March 1968 with a degree in accounting.

James Robert Wiggins, 55, of Superior, Wis., passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013. He was born Nov. 4, 1957, in Duluth, Minn., to John W. and Mary P. (Pflum) Wiggins and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1976. Jim had been a car salesman for Krenzen's and North Country Auto Exchange and was currently working in the Wal-Mart Deli in Cloquet, Minn. He was an avid collector of "treasures" from old memorabilia to coins and other unique odds and ends. Jim loved reading unusual books about a wide variety of things. Every Friday you could find him out at garage sales. He was forever adding to his collections. Jim was a very engaging man and everyone enjoyed talking to him. He was fun spirited, had a million-watt smile, and a boisterous laugh.

Vernon James Schlichting
Vernon James Schlichting, 80, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away very peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2012, in Community Memorial Hospital, Cloquet. He was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Royalton, Minn., and later moved with his family to Duluth, Minn. Vern was a young entrepreneur, selling Liberty magazines with his brother Al at the young age of 9-10. He then ran a successful shoe shine stand near the Greyhound Bus Depot for several years. Vern started his career with U.S. Steel at the age of 15. He worked as a crane operator, instrument repairman and foreman prior to his retirement at the age of 45. After retirement, he and his brother Al worked together repairing appliances. He also served in the United States Army. Vern loved the Minnesota Vikings and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He treasured his time spent at the hunting shack with his father, brother and nephews. His greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He loved his daughter, step-children, sons-in-law and grandchildren unconditionally and wholeheartedly. His family meant the world to him.

Leroy C. Starkey, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. Leroy was born Oct. 13, 1926, in St. James, Minn., to Clara and Clement Starkey. He was in the Navy during World War II. Leroy hauled lumber on the North Shore, drove bus, worked for Northwest Paper and the Potlatch Corporation, retiring in 1988. Helen Wilhelmina Simberg
Helen Wilhelmina Simberg was called to Our Lord on Monday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Virginia Regional Medical Center in Virginia, Minn. She was 88 years young. Helen was born the youngest of eight children to Salomon Ludvig Latvala and Johanna Liisa Petteri Korpela in Cloquet, Minn., on June 8, 1924. She grew up and graduated high school in Cloquet and attended Duluth Business University. She worked in the Northwest Paper Company general office as a secretary (she used her shorthand the rest of her life), and had an active social life including golfing and dancing. She later met and married Viljo (Bud) Simberg. They moved to Virginia and built a house just north of town where she lived until Bud died in 2001. Helen worked at Apollo Piping Company until her retirement. Helen then spent the remaining years in Washington Manor and Edgewood Vista in Virginia. Helen and Bud's union produced four children: Carol Alison Simberg (Cal Root) of Elmhurst, Ill., Alan Webster Simberg (Donna Taquinto) of Maine, Steven Douglas Simberg (Patricia Kummer) of Virginia, and James Ronald Simberg of Racine, Wis.
