Firefighters from nine area fire

departments held a practice drill in the wood yard at the Sappi paper mill in Cloquet earlier this month, with great success. The

training

exercise was one of the largest held in

recent years. Participating fire

departments included Esko, Carlton, Mahtowa, Industrial, Wrenshall, East Brevator, West Brevator, Culver and the Cloquet Area Fire District.

  • Looking down from the top of the Sappi boiler – the highest freestanding building north of the Twin Cities – fire trucks looked like toy trucks and the piles of wood like matchsticks. However, the practice fire drill held Sept. 20 was a serious matter for both the paper mill and the nine area fire departments that participated. Jana Peterson/jpeterson@pinejournal.com
