Gladys Bernice Skaarnes, 93, of Cloquet, Minn., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth, Minn. God has brought home one of his greatest creations. She was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Cloquet to Sam and Anna Johnson.
Gladys was raised in Cloquet and graduated from Cloquet High School. Gladys worked at the "match mill" (Diamond Brands) for a short time. She married Kaare Skaarnes on Aug. 11, 1951, in Cloquet. Gladys worked as a waitress at Jim's Hamburger and was eventually promoted to manager. Gladys and Kaare bought Jim's Hamburger to start Kaare's Kafé.
Gladys was a longtime active member of Bethany Evangelical Covenant Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and working in her garden.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Kaare, and son Cory.
She is survived by her son Steve (Jeanne Levonian) Skaarnes of Racine, Wis.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Cori and Erik; daughter-in-law, Nancy Asher of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Chris Jensen Nursing Home, Essentia Health Hospice team, and a special thank you and hug to our special friend, Joyce Burnes.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow.
