Ruth Johanna Ezell
Ruth J. Ezell, 91, of Carlton, Minn., passed away on Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2012, at Essentia Health Care in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by her loving family. She was born Ruth Johanna Lundquist to Adolph and Alma (Mannisto) Lundquist on June 24, 1921, in Duluth. She was raised in Duluth and later moved to New York Mills, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1939. Ruth went attended Hibbing Junior College for two years before going on to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her education was interrupted by the attack on Pearl Harbor and declaration of World War II. She enlisted in the United States Army where she served as Chief Radio Operator. Ruth later continued her education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She was employed as a laboratory technician by St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth and later as an educator at both the Moose Lake School District and Carlton School District from where she retired in 1984.

Ruth was a dedicated member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall, Minn., where she was the organist. As a veteran, she was also an active member of the VFW Post in Carlton. Ruth's love of the United States of America, her Finnish heritage, her family, her faith, her many friends, the outdoors and living in general were obvious every day of her wonderful life. She will be deeply missed by family and friends both near and far.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; her brother, Ormond; and sister, Vivian.
She is survived by her sons, William of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Roger (Celeste) of Byron, Ark., and John (Deborah) of Carlton; her daughters, Mary and Margaret, both of Salem, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wrenshall with a visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service. The Rev. John Knierim will be the officiant and music will be provided by Tom Cawcutt. Pallbearers are Joe Kavanaugh, Jamie and Jason Vee, Jason Leuck, Eric Rustad, Mike Anderson, Sean Ezell, Nate Sapik and Joe Becker. Interment service will be at Hillside Cemetery with military honors presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post Honor Guard. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the church social hall.
