Martin Hovde
Martin Hovde, 85, of Cloquet, Minn., died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, Minn. He was born Oct. 20, 1926, in Walker, Minn., to Arne and Anna Hovde. He graduated from Walker High School in 1945. Martin served in the United States Army during World War II. On June 21, 1947, he married Charlotte Hunt in Palisade, Minn. Martin worked as the postmaster at Ah Gwah Ching for several years. He drove truck for Eddy's Bread in Floodwood and Grand Rapids, Minn. He also managed the Holiday Station Store in Grand Rapids. In 1967 he moved to Cloquet where he managed the Cloquet Holiday Station Store until 1988. He then worked at Alaspa Gas Station until retiring in 2006 at the age of 80.

Martin was a Sunday school teacher in Grand Rapids and Cloquet, where he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing his entire life, gardening and woodworking. For many years, Martin and Charlotte enjoyed RV traveling and camping.
Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; brothers, Arthur, Torfinn, Earling, Alfred and Paul; and one great grandson, Liam Martin Eddy.
He is survived by four daughters, Shirley (Stan) Olsen and Sharon (John) Hendricks, both of Minneapolis, Minn., Charlene Love of Yankton, S.D., and Crystal (Gary) Youngs of Shakopee, Minn.; three sons, Dennis (Anne), Don (Kathy) and David, all of Saginaw, Minn.; sisters, Millie (Earl) Grendahl of Exeland, Wis., Arlene Bly of McIntosh, Minn., and Signe (Ivan) Pederson of Westbrook, Minn.; sister-in-law, Malene Hovde of Stockbridge, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the church social hall. Military honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Palisade at 3 p.m.
