Kathleen Marie Gawboy

Kathleen Marie Gawboy, 73, of Ely, Minn., passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012, after a short stay at Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 17, 1938, to Reino H. and Marie Katherine Puumala of Cloquet, Minn.

Kathleen Marie Gawboy, 73, of Ely, Minn., passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012, after a short stay at Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 17, 1938, to Reino H. and Marie Katherine Puumala of Cloquet, Minn.

She was raised in Cloquet, attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in bacteriology, and then she attained a bachelor's degree in education and taught math and science for several decades in Aurora-Hoyt Lakes until she retired. Throughout her teaching career she coached many girls' sports teams, including gymnastics, track and field, volleyball and a state champion cross country ski team. She was an active member of the teachers union. After retirement she worked part time as a lab tech at Cook County Hospital. For the past 20 years she resided at Johnson Lake and in Ely. Kathleen was a strong and accomplished outdoorswoman. Her other interests and talents were too numerous to list.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Jack M. Niemi; and Amy Niobe Gawboy.

She is survived by Drs. Ricard and Barbara Puumala of Cloquet; Nancy Ann Luomala of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Mark Puumala of Lakewood, Colo.; Dierre N. Puumala of Grand Lake, Colo; Dale and Ann Marie Puumala of Mountain View, Calif; Linden Marie Gawboy and Mike Kelly of Ely and Minneapolis; James Tay (JT) Reino Gawboy of Soudan, Minn.; Paula Gawboy of Tower, Minn.; Clayton Berg of Chisholm, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, with visitation at 1 p.m. at Kerntz Funeral Home, 140 E. Sheridan St., Ely.
