Walter Dean Cummings, 81, of Esko, Minn., died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton, Minn.
Walter Dean Cummings, 81, of Esko, Minn., died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton, Minn. He was born in 1929 in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Elmer and Louise Cummings. He was a 1946 graduate of Pine City High School. Walter was a Korean War veteran, serving from 1951-1953 in the United States Army, Company "C," 4th Medium Tank Battalion. He married Shirla Ott on Sept. 19, 1953 in Valley City, N.D.
Walter farmed in Brook Park, Minn., until 1957. He then moved to Esko and was employed by Moses Chevrolet for 34 years from 1957-1991 as a mechanic, then shop foreman and as the service manager.
Walt was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting and camping.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lola Cutler; an infant brother; and an infant granddaughter, Brittannia Lee Cummings.
Walt is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Shirla of Esko; his son, Steven (Jody) Cummings of McGregor, Minn.; his two daughters, Sharon Cummings of Esko and Beth Cummings of Duluth, Minn.; his three grandchildren, Brittany Cummings of Aurora, Colo., Derek Cummings of Bloomington, Minn., and Ethan Cummings of McGregor; and several extended family members.
Per Walter's request, no services will be held.
In lieu of flowers to the family, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Foundation.
