Roger A. Peterson, 84, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn., with family at his side.
Roger A. Peterson, 84, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn., with family at his side. He was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Cloquet to Bjarne "Barney" and Muriel (Hall) Peterson. Roger graduated from Cloquet High School and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He worked for Potlatch Corporation and retired as supervisor of the stud mill. Roger was a member of the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 of Cloquet and the Potlatch Quarter Century Club.
Roger had a love of the outdoors. He spent many hours gardening and enjoying the wildlife outside his windows. He took many hunting trips to Montana and enjoyed many hunting seasons at the shack in Floodwood. Roger loved camping and with his wife took many trips with their friends. They spent winters in Yuma with this same group of friends and continued to meet Thursdays for lunch. Together they had a love of travel and had many stories to share of their European trips.
Roger was an avid photographer. His military duties included photographing military events, places, equipment and personnel. He kept his own darkroom for many years and once served as a photographer for the Pine Knot. Roger was an exceptional carpenter and he blessed many with the beautiful gifts of his handiwork.
Most of all Roger was a loving mentor to his family and he valued his many friendships. Family and friends will forever hold him dear in their hearts. His memory will always bring joy and happiness. The family would like to thank Dr. Peaslee for his years of care and the Solvay Hospice House staff for their wonderful care. Special thanks to the Hospice team of Amy, Shannon, Pastor Dave, Kristine and Tod.
Memorials are preferred to the Cloquet Educational Foundation or the Solvay Hospice House.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; and his brother Harvey Peterson.
He is survived by one sister, Beatrice (Roy) Hagen; his brother Robert Peterson; two sister-in-laws, Lois Erickson and Helen Sjoblad; one brother-in-law, Edward "Pete" (Irene) Polley; nieces and nephews, Susan (Dick) Mans, David (Barbara) Sjoblad, Steven (Beth) Sjoblad, Mark (Cheryl) Sjoblad, Karen (Brian) Gilchrist, Jan (Lee) Anderson, Leslee (Dan) Naslund, Tracy (Tom) Berscheid, Scott Erickson, Wayne Polley, Keith Polley, Jason (Tammie) Polley, Judy Polley, Rita (Fred) Erickson, Anne (Ron) Anderson, Rick (Debra) Hagen, Ron (Kathy) Hagen, and Julie (Jay) Anderson; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 4, from 4 p.m. until the 5 p.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care, 1004 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet, followed by full military honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A time of fellowship and a meal will follow the service.

My condolences to the family. Roger was a fun guy to be with the few times (mostly at family gatherings at Lois's) I was in the pleasure of his company.03/04/2010 8:20 PM
