Vernon "Nick" J. Knickerbocker, 77, of Scanlon, Minn., passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, Minn.
Vernon "Nick" J. Knickerbocker, 77, of Scanlon, Minn., passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, Minn. He was born June 15, 1932, in Cloquet to Vernon and Isabelle (Caron) Knickerbocker and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1951. Vern served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Elma Mart on June 25, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cloquet. Vern worked for 47 years for the Wood Conversion, Conwed Corp. and U.S.G Interiors retiring as a millwright and supervisor of the truck shop in 1998. He loved his work as a mechanic and getting his hands dirty. Vern enjoyed going to the casino, listening to country music, playing cards with his friends, solving crossword puzzles, and traveling with family and friends. He was a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet and the Conwed 25 Year Club.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elma; five children, Vicky (Roger Pickering) Knickerbocker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Ricky Knickerbocker of Scanlon, Bonny (Jim) Ranta of Cloquet, Cindy Beck of Cloquet, and Mark Knickerbocker of Savage, Minn.; three grandchildren, Autumn Beck, Nicholes Beck and Jesse Knickerbocker; two great-grandchildren, Alex Antiel and Isabelle Hamsmith; one brother, Dennis (Mary Lou) Knickerbocker of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Mary Ahlgren of Cook, Minn.; two special friends, Michelle Kolodge and Marty O'Leary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet with Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship room. The family has selected Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet to assist them with arrangements. See their online guest book at www.nelsonfuneralcare.net.
