Sylvester Earl "Ike" Isaacson, 91, of Carlton, Minn., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton.
Sylvester Earl "Ike" Isaacson, 91, of Carlton, Minn., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Duluth, Minn., to Isaac and Josephine (Gustafson) Isaacson. Sylvester grew up in Swan River and graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1936. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Itasca Community College, and had attended the University of Minnesota. Sylvester was a World War II Army veteran and studied Norwegian through the Advanced Special Training Program at the University of Oregon in Eugene and served in the European Theater. He was united in marriage to Olive Wilson on Jan. 12, 1951, in Mahtowa, Minn. They owned and operated Isaacson's Food Market in Carlton for 28 years, retiring in 1976; thereafter he sold promotional products for the Thos. J. Murphy Company for many years. Sylvester was a charter member of the Carlton Lions Club; had served as a Cub Master in Carlton; was a member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton; a 20-year member of the Carlton Volunteer Fire Department; and was a faithful member of Bethesda Lutheran Church.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Olive.
He is survived by two sons, Colin (Grace) Isaacson of Angora, Minn., and the Rev. Lance (Nancy) Isaacson of Aitkin, Minn.; two daughters, Gweneth (Roger) Peck of Alexandria, Minn., and Lisa (Steven) Oelfke of Corcoran, Minn.; six grandchildren, Thomas Oelfke, Katherine Oelfke, Laura Peck, John Isaacson, Annika Peck and Madeline Isaacson.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton. The visitation will resume Saturday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service, also at Bethesda Lutheran Church, followed by military honors presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 Honor Guard. Spring interment will be at Hillside Cemetery.
