Willard Louis "Louie" Spicer, 80, of Cambridge, Minn., formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at his home surrounded by family.
Willard Louis "Louie" Spicer, 80, of Cambridge, Minn., formerly of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at his home surrounded by family. He was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Wayne County, Mich., to Fay and Eleanore (Johnson) Spicer. When he was young the family moved to a farm in Wright, Minn., where Louie attended grade school. The family moved to Superior, Wis., where he attended high school. They also lived in Cloquet. After high school, in July 1948 Louie enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Korean Conflict. While in the Navy he was united in marriage to Irene Stasinowsky on Feb. 3, 1951, in Yarmouth, Maine. Irene lived with her mother until Louie was honorably discharged in July 1952. The couple moved to Minnesota and made their home in Cloquet where they raised their three children. Louie was a heavy equipment operator and advanced to supervisor of the street department for the city of Cloquet and retired after working there 35 years. They remained in Cloquet until 1996 when they purchased a home west of Cambridge and have lived there since. Louie was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Dalbo, and the Cloquet American Legion for 23 years. He enjoyed fishing, working on the farm with his son Tim, doing crossword puzzles, making lawn ornaments and other crafts, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He and Irene spent several winters in Delray Beach, Fla.,as well as time at the cabin at Crane Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Walter, and sister June Korzynski.
Louie is survived by his wife, Irene of Cambridge; daughter, Bonnie and husband Jim Burdine of Cambridge; sons Michael and wife Joyce Spicer of Stanchfield, and Tim and wife Colleen Spicer of Cambridge; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Salem Lutheran Church in Dalbo with the Rev. Bill Pearson officiating. A time to visit will be one hour prior to the service. Wendell and Laurel Johnson, accompanied by Roberta Erickson, will provided the special music. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Nelson, Pete Larson, Maurie Antonson, Gene Wiersma, Ronnie Berg, Robert Lewis, Tom Kloskowski and Dave Maki. A private interment will be held at a later date.
