Urho Julius Mattson, 86, of Cloquet, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, in the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn.
Urho Julius Mattson, 86, of Cloquet, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, in the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, Minn. He was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Embarrass, Minn., to John and Maria Mattson. He grew up in Markham, Palo and Aurora. Urho worked in the mines on the Iron Range for a short time. He moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1948 where he worked in construction and roofing for 32 years. He retired in 1980 and moved to Cloquet. Urho enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Urho was preceded in death by his brothers, Wilho Mattson, John Juhola and Frank Juhola; and sisters, Edna Perkola, Hazel Toikka, Suoma Maki and Elsie Juhola.
He is survived by his sister, Amanda Elaine Popovich of Aurora, Minn.; brothers, Matt Mattson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and George (Carmen) Mattson of Alexandria, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 22, from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the Fireside Room of the funeral home.
