George E. Dauplaise died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born May 2, 1927, in Superior, Wis., to Omer J. Dauplaise and Ellen (Anderson) Dauplaise. George was the youngest of eight children. George graduated from Superior (Wis.) Central in 1945 and went into the Army Air Corp where he served four years, mostly in Okinawa. After his return from World War II he moved to Cloquet, Minn., and worked as parts manager for Moses Chevrolet in Esko, Minn. In 1969 he became part owner of Evergreen Lanes in Cloquet. In the 1970s he partnered with Gerald Pollard to build Southgate Bowl and Southgate Standard. He also served on the Carlton County Welfare Board and the Board of Directors of the Cloquet Co-op Credit Union. After George “retired” he worked in the oil and natural gas industry in Kansas and was a manager for Sun Country Airlines in Las Vegas. George was an avid golfer, bowler and was a private pilot for many years.
George became a successful man through his natural intelligence, hard work and a common sense approach to any problem. He believed you could achieve whatever you set your mind to achieve. Many people were inspired by his example.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bernadette (Elliot) Joelson, Antionette (Paul) Mccabe, Lucille (John) Feira, Maryhelen (Kenneth) Carlson; and brothers Bruce (Eleanor) Dauplaise and Omer (Bonnie) Dauplaise.
George is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cleo (Stockman); sons, Michael of Ham Lake, Minn., Terrance of Torrance, Calif., Steven of Minneapolis, Minn., and Christopher of Cloquet; stepdaughters, Joan Dahlgren of Cloquet, Cindy Rouleau of Cloquet, Wendy Johnson of Cloquet and stepsons Jean Butters of Kenosha, Wis., and Scott Rouleau of Greenfield, Tenn. He is also survived by his sister, Jean (Norb) Nixa of Sioux City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
George had requested to be cremated. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held with his family at a future date.
