Urho Tuomi

Urho Tuomi, 84, of Tamarack, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, in Villa Vista Nursing Home, Cromwell, Minn.

Urho Tuomi, 84, of Tamarack, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, in Villa Vista Nursing Home, Cromwell, Minn. The son of Nick and Impi Tuomi, he was born in Wright, Minn., in 1921. Urho attended Lakeside School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was a member of the 24th Infantry Division when Luzon, Philippines, was captured and also served during the occupation of Japan.

Urho was a dairy farmer in Wright until he retired. After his retirement, he enjoyed many breakfasts in town with his friend, Carl Walli. He loved to play horseshoes and participated in many tournaments. Urho was also a member of the local “pool club” which met every week.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben, and his sister, Verna Belanger.

Urho is survived by three brothers, Arnie (Helen) Tuomi of Moose Lake, Minn., George Tuomi of Kettle River, Minn., and Wiljo (Joan) Walli of Rogers, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, followed by lunch in the Fireside Room of the funeral home. Burial will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 2:15 p.m. in Lakeside Cemetery, Wright.
