DemCon has two landfills in Shakopee, one lined (above) and one unlined. They also have an extensive recycling operation that reuses nearly 80 percent of the waste brought in, from old boards to concrete to shingles and metal. The waste that goes into the lined landfill has to be covered every 30 days, and is packed down by the huge metal wheels of the compactor. Once a portion of a landfill is full, it is covered by dirt and grasses. Jana Peterson/jpeterson@pinejournal.com
