Lillian Rachel HillLillian Rachel Hill, 91, went to heaven Monday, Sept. 2, 2013. She died peacefully in her sleep at the Lincoln Meadows Care Center in Lincoln, Calif. She was born the youngest of seven children to Finnish homesteaders Matt and Tyyne Kultala on their Brevator Township farm on July 30, 1922. After her 1940 graduation from Brookston High School, she completed a post-grad course and then worked as an operator for Northwest Bell Telephone in Duluth, Minn. In 1943 Lillian traveled to Los Angeles with her sister and took a job at Terminal Island making PT boats. She returned to Duluth and in December 1944 married her sweetheart, Great Lakes seaman Olavi Hill. They soon found work together aboard a bulk carrier on the Great Lakes, he as a wheelsman and she as a porter and then as a cook. They sailed together for two years and eventually moved to Southern California to start their family, where he worked as a boilermaker and she as a homemaker raising their two children. In 1994 Olavi and Lillian moved to San Jose, Calif., and in 2004 "Grandma Lilly" joined her family in Lincoln. She always adored her family and friends, long walks, cooking and baking, polka music and playing Scrabble. A loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma and friend, she was loved by all.
