Vernon 'Butch' JohnsonVernon A. "Butch" Johnson of Cloquet, Minn., formerly of Windom, Minn., passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. He was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Burnstown Township, Brown County, Minn., to Art P. and Alice L. (Peterson) Johnson. He was baptized and later confirmed in 1948 at Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton, Minn. Butch graduated in 1952 from Jeffers High School of Jeffers, Minn. He was married June 20, 1954, to LaVonne Meier at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom. Two children were born to this marriage. The couple farmed northwest of Jeffers and Butch drove school bus until 1967, when they moved to Windom. Butch was employed by Bolin Lumber for several years before beginning his employment as a heavy equipment operator with the Cottonwood County Highway Department, where he retired in 1995. He continued as part-time janitor for the Highway Department until 2009. For health reasons, Butch and LaVonne moved to Cloquet in 2009 in order to be closer to family. Butch was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko, Minn. Butch enjoyed fishing, the Minnesota Twins, gardening and travel.
